First Time for Everything

This is the only time I have ever written a piece to share with the public. As a child, I always loved reading and spelling, but I never thought I would using those skills to get a degree. My first year of college at The University of Tulsa, I was studying Athletic Training, but the classes were not the right fit for me. Although I could spend my life watching sports, I would also have to spend time watching injuries happen. Cuts and bruises are one thing, but broken bones are not a pretty sight. Quickly I came to realize that memorizing bones and muscles was not the best thing for me to study, if I wasn’t going pursue a career in athletic training.

Eventually, I decided to change my major to Communications, and narrowed it down to Journalism, where I could actually do something I enjoy and learn how to perfect my writing. Writing essays for English classes was easy for me, and the words just spilled out. Consequently, I was basically starting my college courses over. After much prayer and talking with my parents, we decided that transferring to Tulsa Community College would be the smartest choice financially. I was excited as I approached classes all about grammar and expressing ideas through media, but I hit a huge stumbling block when I learned that everything I had learned for writing essays was going to be close to useless. I would need to learn different formatting and styles and attempt to write concisely and cut my pieces down to the big details.

8 weeks into the second semester at TCC, and I am loving every bit of the challenge. Assignments are becoming less like work and more enjoyable to complete. Never in a million years would I think that having to read and give my opinion of a book would count as a grade and give me experience for review articles. Each assignment has shown me just how much God has been in control. Through the uncertainty of what I want to study, he has given me peace in knowing that we can trust in the One who created every good thing.

I am really hoping that practicing my writing will prepare me for future jobs, but I also want to be a positive influence on my friends and family. My parents and other Christian influences in my life have shown me that we should look for the purpose that God has for us, and praise Him in all circumstances. A verse that I have tried to hold onto since I was a senior in high school is “And whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”- Colossians 3:17. Being intentional in my words and actions is crucial to being a good witness of who my Savior is, and my goal for this is to let Him be glorified in all that I do.
